In this class, we will be exploring how to draw from observation at the lovely rose garden at Frances Park. Through this exercise, we will be learning the foundations of drawing, including composition, proportion, shading, line weight, and mark making. We will also introduce techniques that make the drawing process easier, such as blocking in forms, visual measurement, and using view finders. This class is the perfect place to start for those who are new to drawing, and will be a welcoming space for artists of all skill levels who are looking to sharpen their craft!

ARTISTS
Thomas Moberg
Thomas Moberg is a painter and jewelry designer living in Lansing, MI, where he creates work that explores the intersection of politics and the environment in the American Midwest. He received his BFA in 2D visual art from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point in 2018, with a focus on figure painting and portraiture. Shortly after graduating, Thomas returned home to care for his terminally ill father, and began plein air painting along the country roads of Wisconsin as a way to process his experience. During this time, he began running weekly life drawing and community critique sessions with the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, and teaching youth art classes with the Center for the Visual Arts.

After his father’s passing in 2019, Thomas went on to complete a three year apprenticeship as a metalsmith at his family’s jewelry business, The Northwoods Goldsmith. Thomas has exhibited his paintings and jewelry nationally across America, and has been an artist-in-residence with Rising Sands Organics in Custer, WI; the Heist in Ripon, WI; and Everwood Farmstead, in Glenwood, WI. In August of 2022, Thomas relocated to Iowa City, where he built a new community jewelry studio with the Iowa City Fab Lab and served as studio technician and instructor. In this last year, Thomas was a guest lecturer for the University of Iowa Jewelry and Metals Department and was invited to compete in Paint Grand Traverse for his second consecutive year.

Most of my paintings have been done in the past year. Had not picked up a brush for over 25 years. Many of my images are from the straits of Mackinaw due to the time that we have spent in the area boating

I was in my studio just playing with paints on a canvas and seeing the blues and the greens, an inspiration came to mind like a flash. My brush works with magic... the fish came to life on my canvas. So came the Fish Tales.

Title or Location: Stanley
This is Stanley, he is a sweet little dachshund puppy that belongs to a daughter of a friend, Kaela. I needed to find a way to produce a sample artwork but have no pets of my own. Kaela had asked how much it would cost for me to paint her puppies even though she knew she felt she couldn't afford it. Well, I'm glad she did, I'm glad she took interest in my work and I really felt connected to the photo she shared with me of this cute little dog.Well, needles to say, I needed to produce a piece
